Market Report

Income Fragmentation in the Platform Economy 2026

How income split across platforms, income types and currencies loses value before it reaches the earner — and why no tool puts it back together.

01 · In short

What this report is about

Income earned across several platforms reaches the earner reduced by each platform’s fee, on each platform’s own payout schedule, and sometimes converted at a rate the platform does not publish. No tool available to earners reassembles those streams into one figure for what was earned and what was kept.

Key figures

  • The average effective platform fee across 145+ platforms is 21.0% (PlatformTaxHub platform dataset).
  • On 77.7% of platforms the fee is taken before the earner is paid, so the gross amount never appears on a bank statement (PlatformTaxHub platform dataset).
  • Of the platforms that convert currency, only 30% publish the conversion rate (PlatformTaxHub platform dataset).
  • 51% of US gig workers also have a main job that is not gig work (US Federal Reserve, 2025).
02 · Context

Why this matters now

Many people earn from several platforms, several kinds of income and several currencies at once. Each stream arrives reduced by fees, on its own timetable, and sometimes converted at a rate the platform does not publish.

Earning in pieces is no longer a fringe arrangement. Around half of US adults doing gig work also hold a main job that is not gig work (US Federal Reserve, 2025).

03 · Contents

What it covers

  1. What income fragmentation is: the three layers — across platforms, across income types, across currencies — and how they compound
  2. What the platform data shows: the fee quoted against the fee taken, how the fee is taken, what company filings show, payout timing, and whether conversion is priced at all
  3. Where current tools stop, and why the gap sits between the categories of tool rather than inside any one of them
  4. Who this affects, including the group that carries every layer at once and is counted nowhere
  5. What the full report adds

The free edition is published and sent by email on request. It carries the headline findings, with the source and date behind every figure, and is free to cite.

Who it is for

Platform earners; mixed-income business owners; accountants and advisers; platforms, fintechs and software providers; journalists and researchers; policymakers and statisticians

05 · Basis

What it is based on

Our own platform database: 145+ earning platforms worldwide, with fee, payout and currency terms taken from each platform’s own published documentation.

Verified in September and October 2026. Payment processors, money transfer services and discontinued programmes are excluded, because nobody earns on them.

Currency conversion costs are taken from published platform and payout-partner terms.

The free edition is free: give an email and it is sent to you. A paid edition carries the full findings by platform and region; we send its contents and price on request.

Give us your name, email, role and country and we send it to you. We ask for role and country because the reports go to very different readers and we would rather send you the right one.

Each platform's own published fee, payout and currency terms, with the date each was checked.

Nobody earns on them. Stripe, PayPal, Wise and Payoneer move money that was earned somewhere else, so including them would describe a cost that is not a platform's fee.

We send you the report, and the next one in the series if you want it. We do not pass your details to anyone else and there is no other mailing list attached to it.
