The Unprepared Accountant 2026: The Unbilled Hours

The non-billable cost of platform and mixed-income clients to accounting and bookkeeping practices, across five regions.

01 · In short

What this report is about

Accounting and bookkeeping practices lose a large share of their time to chasing client records, rebuilding books after the fact and reconciling figures that do not match. Most of that time is never billed, and platform and mixed-income clients make all three worse because the records arrive net of fees, in several currencies, on schedules that do not line up.

Key figures

  • Accountants expected to spend about 1 hour 48 minutes a week checking bad client data. Measured, it was 4 hours 46 minutes (Dext, 2021, 2,183 accountants and bookkeepers in six countries).
  • 65.2% of accounting, bookkeeping and tax firm owners named getting documents from clients as their biggest workflow challenge, up from 53.8% a year earlier (Financial Cents, 2024).
  • In the first quarter of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, only 25% of accountants surveyed said their fees fully covered their time (Accountants Therapy, reported by ICAEW, August 2026).
  • On 77.7% of platforms the fee is taken before the client is paid, so the gross figure has to be rebuilt from a payout report (PlatformTaxHub platform dataset).
02 · Context

Why this matters now

Practices spend a large share of their time chasing client records, rebuilding books after the fact and reconciling figures that do not match. Most of that time is never billed. This report calls it the unbilled hours.

Three changes are arriving together. Quarterly digital reporting has started, and the main obstacle practitioners named was getting information from clients. Tax authorities now see platform income directly, from platform reports rather than from the return. And clients are using general-purpose AI tools before they call their accountant.

Surveys of practice time are plentiful in the United States and the United Kingdom and scarce almost everywhere else. This report brings practitioner research from 13 countries and client-side evidence from six more into one view, and states plainly where no data exists.
